AWAKEN | DAY 10
“Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.”1 JOHN 4:11-12
First and most importantly, God loves us. He gave, and He gives and it never stops. His love is endless and sacrificial. His love thinks of each one of us, making sure we have every opportunity to succeed. His love puts others ahead of His own.
Incredibly, “his love is made complete in us” when we love one another. The word “complete” in the verse above means “to make or be found perfect; to accomplish.” So, here it is. Loving others, is proof that God lives in us and that His love is being perfected in us. And, as He lives and accomplishes His work of love in us, we continually love people. It’s an ongoing thing that we can never get away from.
Paul breaks down what “complete” love looks like in his letter to the Philippians, “Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends. Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand” (Philippians 2:2-4 MSG).
Love for others like Paul describes is what perfects or matures God’s love in us. Make room in your heart today for God to live and make Himself complete in you.
Father, thank you for loving me completely. You sent your best — your Son, Jesus. You have modeled love for me so I have no excuses. You have shown me explicitly in your word what perfect love looks like. I want to keep your commands and want you to live inside of me. As you love me, help me extend the same generous love to others.
