AWAKEN | DAY 17

“Since, then, you’ve been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds [or affections] on things above, not on earthly things.”COLOSSIANS 3:2

Thinking higher thoughts takes discipline. It’s not always easy to shift our thoughts beyond our present situations. There are bills to pay, kids to feed, papers to write, important people to meet, and hair and nails to get done. The news reminds us all day, every day what is wrong in our world. We have justices to administer and offenses to address. Advertisements, commercials and blurbs beckon us. We have clothes, kicks and bling to buy. Life and schedules swirl and distract us from all angles.

Paul challenged the Colossians to set their hearts and minds on Christ. The original word used for set means to “exercise the mind.” That means we have to intentionally train our thoughts to think above our calendars, circumstances and the mundane. We have to practice lifting our speech above our “cursing” and naysaying. Paul tells us how:

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you” (Philippians 4:8-9 NIV).

We are heirs of God, co-heirs of Jesus (Romans 8:17). As children of God, we have the mandate and the privilege of thinking, speaking and desiring higher things. Practice the Word of God and you’ll soon see where your affections lie.

Let’s pray.

Father, you have made us sit in heavenly places through Christ Jesus. Let my thoughts, words and affections be always reaching above my problems or circumstances. Help me to fill my mind with your Word so that my words will be your words, and my thoughts your thoughts. I want to exercise all that glorifies you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
