AWAKEN | DAY 19
“Live in love as Christ also loved us. He gave his life for us as an offering and sacrifice, a soothing aroma to God.”
One of the most intriguing things about our five senses is the ability to instantly associate a smell with a past experience. I’m sure you can relate. It happened to me this week during our fast. Out of nowhere, I smelled a heavenly aroma — one that ignited my senses and cravings. It was the scent of hot, fresh, buttery popcorn! Oh man, I can smell it even now. But it wasn’t just my cravings that were stirred. Upon smelling this wonderful aroma, my mind immediately raced back to my days as a sports writer for Oral Roberts University. Nearly every Saturday of the winter months you would find me sitting on press row, recording the statistics of the afternoon basketball game, participating in the post-game press conference and enjoying complimentary, all-I-could-eat, fresh and delicious, buttery popcorn. This was a great memory, stimulated by one whiff of fresh popcorn.
Have you ever considered that our lives carry a certain aroma? Think about it. As followers of Christ, our lives should put off a pleasing and soothing “scent” to the world around us. Ask yourself these questions: When I walk into a room, a new relationship or a new environment, is the fragrance of my lifestyle pleasant or repulsive? Does the aroma of my life cause people to associate my life to that of Christ’s love and grace?
Lord, simply hearing your name, uplifts my soul. You are a friend to the friendless and hope to the hopeless. I am asking you to help me become more like you. I desire to bring you glory in all areas of my life. Help me sound, hear, and even smell more like you. I want my lifestyle to be pleasing to you and uplifting to others. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
